Song 1:15 “How beautiful you are, my darling,
How beautiful you are!
Your eyes are like doves.”
Song 1:16 “How handsome you are, my beloved,
And so pleasant!
Indeed, our couch is luxuriant!
Song 2:1 “I am the rose of Sharon,
The lily of the valleys.”
Song 2:2 “Like a lily among the thorns,
So is my darling among the maidens.”
Song 2:3 “Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest,
So is my beloved among the young men.
In his shade I took great delight and sat down,
And his fruit was sweet to my taste.
At this point in our journey through the Song of Solomon you might be wondering is it really possible that God could love me as it’s described in the Song of Solomon. I am convinced that’s why the Song of Solomon is so important. The Song of Solomon is full of over-the-top language about how much God loves us. It is the flowery language of poetry, and it transcends the language of every day conversation. Remember, this is the Song of the Lamb that Jesus sings over us now, and throughout eternity. Therefore, just as the Cross is an over-the-top action conveying God’s love for us, the language of the Song of Solomon is intentionally over-the-top language used by Jesus to communicate the true nature of God’s wild love. In this small book the Lord is attempting to use language to communicate how much He loves us. I use the word ”attempt,” not because God doesn’t have the language, but because in our fallen state it is hard for us to understand such love.
Let these thoughts sink in. John 13 says that Jesus loves us to the end. Micah 7:18 says, that God delights in unending love. He will never stop loving us, and not only that, He delights in it. I asked the Lord one time, “I realize that You will never stop loving me, and I’m beginning to realize that You delight in loving me, but when did You start?” The Holy Spirit spoke into my heart immediately; “The first time I saw you.” I was then reminded of Jeremiah 31:2, which says “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” I did a study on the word EVERLASTING, and discovered that the word means “forever in the past and forever in the future.” His first sight of me, and his first thought of me was forever. He said, “It was love at first sight, which has always been.” God so loved the world before a single person got saved. He didn’t start loving me when I gave my life to Him. He had always loved me. Romans 5:8 says, that God gave a demonstration of His amazing love in that He loved us while we were still sinners. Before we could respond; before we could be obedient; before we were forgiven, He loved us. When we give our lives to Jesus then He is able to enjoy the love relationship that He created us for, and in that love relationship I can ravish His heart through loves response to Him. But He has never not loved me. This is a love that is impossible to comprehend apart from the Holy Spirit. That is why He uses such extravagant language, in human terms, to try to help us understand how truly lovesick He is, and has always been concerning you and me. He loves the Lost the same way, but he cannot pour His love out on them because they have resisted Him, but as believers, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can receive His love, we can hear His words, and we can respond by loving Him back. Again, this is why He loves to say extravagantly transparent things to us, because as redeemed humans we can enjoy them and respond to them. Yes!!! GOD SO LOVES!!!
