John 1:51; 2:3-5 NASB95
John 1:51 NASB95
And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” [4] And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” [5] His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
It is so important that we have a consciousness that Jesus is our open heaven. Our union with him positions us to experience the life of heaven being lived out on earth. We have been joined to His life, and we participate in His intimate fellowship and walk with God by the Holy Spirit. Romans 6:11 says, “Even so consider yourselves… living to God in Christ Jesus.” Our walk with God is in the person of Christ. Again, He is our open heaven. We don’t get an open heaven because we prayed enough, or fasted enough, or had someone lay hands on us. Our open heaven is Jesus, and therefore if you are in Christ, you have the open heaven life that Jesus enjoys.
In light of that, it is also important that we remember it’s by His faith we live, not by our independent faith. We live by what He sees, thinks, and, therefore, believes about everything. The servants at the wedding of Cana participated in the miracle of water being turned into wine. They were given the privilege of sharing in the open heaven that Jesus is. After the water was turned into wine, Jesus told the servants to draw some out of the waterpots and take it to the headwaiter. When the headwaiter tasted the water, which had become wine, verse 9 says, “he did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew.”) Can you imagine what was going on in the hearts and minds of the servants who participated in the supernatural activity of Jesus? It must’ve been amazing. I think that the servants had the most fun of anyone at that wedding. I do want you to see something, though, that’s very significant. When Jesus told them to fill the waterpots with water, they did exactly what Jesus asked and did it to the hilt, for it says they “filled the water to the brim.” When they stepped out and acted in light of what Jesus told them, they weren’t stepping out on their faith. They acted in light of what Jesus believed was going to happen. They may not have known exactly what Jesus was going to do, but they knew that He believed He was going to do something. They lived in that moment by His faith. This is the Christian life. This is what allows us to “experience “ the wonder of Christ being our open heaven, stepping out in childlike anticipation, based on what Jesus believes. Faith is our resting in what He believes, stepping out in “to the hilt” obedience in hilarious anticipation of all that Jesus is going to do in each moment.
