Psalm 73:25-26 NASB [25] Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. [26] My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
One of the heroes of the faith for me was a man named Hudson Taylor. He was one of the greatest missionaries in church history. Near the beginning of the 20th century, one third of all the missionaries in the world served in the organization that he headed up, the China Inland Mission. At one point in his life, someone was interviewing him concerning all the responsibilities that he had and all the many difficulties that he had to trust the Lord with, in light of some of the great persecution many of his missionaries were experiencing at the hand of the Chinese. When asked how he was able to deal with all the heartache and pressure, he simply responded by saying, “When things are at their worst, I cannot read, I cannot pray, I can scarcely even think, but I can trust.”
There are those times when our heart and our entire humanity feels like it’s failing, but it is in those times that we can trust that Jesus will be the strength of our heart and our portion forever. Jesus is a portion that is always satisfying and always sufficient. Maybe you are at a place even now where it feels as if all of your strength, mentally, emotionally, and maybe even physically is totally exhausted, and you just don’t feel that trying harder is an option. It’s at that point where we learn to simply trust. Trust isn’t about trying; instead, it is about letting go of the trying and simply resting in His faithfulness. 2 Timothy 2:13 over the years has been a verse that has always ministered life to me, especially in those seasons when my heart and my strength fail. Let these words sink in; “even when we believe not, He abides faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.”
If you are at a place where you are not sure you can even believe anymore; all is not lost, because at that point you can just trust that He will be faithful. You can rest in the fact that in whatever situation you are in, He will be Himself in that situation. He will prove himself again to be the portion that is totally sufficient and satisfying.
