Is Jesus content with a single glance of our eyes? No, but He does want us to know that just a single glance from us in His direction moves His heart. It not only moves His heart; Song of Solomon 4:9 says that a single glance from us ravishes His heart. Why did the Holy Spirit say that? Don’t you think He might be concerned that we will be content with just offering a glance towards Christ from time to time while we still gaze toward other things as our primary devotion, in light of His grace-filled tenderness? You have to remember that God is love, and therefore He is the ultimate romantic, and He honestly believes that His all-consuming burning heart for us is big enough to consume us into a life of lovesick gazing in His direction. Verse 9 of Song of Solomon 4 reads like this, “You have made my heart beat faster, my sister, my bride. You have made my heart beat faster with the single glance of your eyes.” Between Song of Solomon 4:9 and 5:2, the Bride of Christ (which, of course, is you and me) is referred to as His “sister” 5 different times. Jesus loves us with limitless passion as His bride, and He also is compassionately patient with us as His sister. As our “brother,” Jesus identifies with our humanity. In His incarnation, He clothed Himself in our frail humanity and allowed Himself to be tempted in every way like us. Jesus though 100% God will forever be fully human, and He loves us with perfect love even in our imperfect humanity. Jesus came conquering and to conquer, and even though He rejoices in conquering the enemy, that which causes Him the most joy is conquering our hearts through His lovesick pose that transparently and vulnerably let’s us know that just a glance from our eyes does Him in. He wins us by swooning over us. He knows that is not threats and condemnation that wins our love. We love because He first loved us.
