S. S. 4:9, “You have made my heart beat faster, my sister, my bride; You have made my heart beat faster with a single glance of your eyes, with a single strand of your necklace.”
This verse is the heart of Song of Solomon. It is also one of the most important versus in all of Scripture, for here you find the heart of God and the heart of the gospel. Notice, how He addressees her. He refers to her as His sister, His bride. This is the first of six times He addresses her using this terminology. In referring to her as His sister, He is identifying with her humanity. Jesus chose to experience great suffering and humiliation to enter into the human experience for our sake. Look at what Hebrews 3:17 says, ” Therefore He had to be made like His brethren in all things.” By identifying so completely with our humanity, Jesus is letting us know that He completely understands the frailty of our human condition and yet, in light of that, He has chosen us to be His bride. That’s an important truth for us to ever keep before us, that Jesus isn’t shocked at our frailty and our weaknesses. He loves us with eyes wide open. The bride that He has chosen, and has pursued with such passion and at such a great price, is in need of forgiveness, mercy, and transformation.
