S.S. 4:10, “How beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much better is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your oils that all kinds of spices!
What a great versus this is following verse nine. After saying in verse 9 that one single look of affection ravishes His heart, and one single act of obedience, offered out of affection, also ravishes Has heart, He says in the first part of verse 10 that OUR love is His greatest pleasure. As a matter of fact, in the second half of verse 10 He says that our very presence is the most satisfying thing in the world to Him. Fragrant oils are rubbed into the skin, and the skin speaks of presence. Again, it’s easy for me to understand that his presence is so pleasing to me, but for Him to say that my being presence to Him is the most satisfying thing to Him is just amazing. If you remember, in chapter 2 verse 14 He tells us but our voice is sweet to Him and to Him our very presence is lovely. Again, in chapter 4 verse 10, just like in 4:9, He calls us His sister, His bride. By calling us His sister here, He affirms to us again that He understands our humanity, and that we aren’t always present to Him as we grow in Christ, but when we are present to Him, He enjoys so much that His heart is completely satisfied. He of course, longs us to always be present to Him, but He doesn’t wait for us to mature to enjoy us. He enjoys us even as we grow, and still express moments of immaturity. I don’t know about you, but that makes me want to be more and more present to Him, practicing His presence.
