Nine different times in the Song of Solomon, the bridegroom Christ refers to the Shulamite bride as His “companion.” In the NASB Bible, the word is translated as “darling,” but in Hebrew, the word is actually “companion.” The idea in the Song of Solomon is that the Shulamite has said yes to be the bridegroom’s “constant companion.” If you look up the word companion in the dictionary, you’ll discover the word carries the meaning of someone you enjoy and who you want to and enjoy spending a lot of time with, and therefore you greatly value that person and their relationship with you. It is profoundly powerful to me that the bridegroom Christ sees me as His companion, not just His responsibility. He enjoys me, and he enjoys my presence. I think companionship is one of the most important things that a person can experience, and the fact that Jesus says that I am His companion blows me away.
Also, in the Song of Solomon, Jesus called the Shulamite bride, His “sister – bride” four different times and, then once in 5:2 He refers to her as His “sister – companion.” Why does the Holy Spirit choose to use the word “sister?” It is because the Holy Spirit is reminding us that the Bridegroom Christ will forever be fully human, though also fully God. Referring to us as His sister – bride and sister – companion says to us that He who is eternally fully human relates to and loves us in our humanity as his bride companion.
It may be the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard that Jesus calls me (as if it were only me) His companion. He enjoys me, and He enjoys and is grateful for my constant presence. I can’t think of a greater honor than to tell people that I personally am Jesus’ companion.
