Song 5:8 ¶ O daughters of Jerusalem, I command you– If you find my beloved, what will you tell him? Tell him that I am lovesick!
This is an amazing verse revealing the heart of one advancing in love and likeness. Chapter 5 tells of the Shulamite being unresponsive to her Beloved and the result being a grieving of the Holy Spirit, and her consciousness of the presence of Christ being hindered. Her attitude, in light of her sin, is verse 8. When we think of a lovesick heart we think of one who is joyfully abiding in His presence, but one the great evidences of a growing lovesick heart is His unbearable absence. If we are casual about our sin then we really haven’t been deeply impacted by His grace. There is a horrible deception out there that somehow thinks that grace gives us permission to be unfaithful to Him, since His love is unconditional. As Paul would say, “may it never be.” It’s His unconditional love that conquers a heart to want to never sin. Grace entices holiness (set apart lovers of Jesus). Lovesickness promotes a desire to never displease His great heart. Unfortunately we do sin, and do grieve Him, but when we do, there should be a desperate longing for restoration, and for Him to know how much we love Him. His presence is so glorious that any sense of absence of fellowship is unbearable. I’m not talking about condemnation and shame, but if you are sick of heart over your sin, that is lovesickness. If your sin has caused you to want Him more than ever before, then Jesus dances over you.
