Psalm 37:5 NASB95
Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
Psalm 37:5 TPT
Give God the right to direct your life, and as you trust him along the way you’ll find he pulled it off perfectly!
Over the years, I have nurtured my soul with this verse many times. It is so practical and insightful into our role and God’s in every situation. The word “commit” in Hebrew literally means “to roll over, or to turn something over to someone,” and every step of the way, our role is to turn over every situation to Him and trust Him with it. Notice that David didn’t say to simply “commit” every situation to the Lord, but he says to “trust” also in Him. I often find people committing things to the Lord but then spending their time fretting over how God is going to do it. Verse 7 in the same Psalm says that we are to “Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him.” It doesn’t say that we are to pester the Lord about the thing we have committed to Him. Verse 8 tells us that fretting about things only leads to other evildoing. I discovered that when I fret about something, instead of trusting God with it, I get involved trying to make it happen in my own strength and by my own wisdom and manipulation. My personal experience confirms the fact that “fretting” only leads to further evildoing.
If you’ll notice that the word “it” at the end of verse 5 is in italics. I put it in italics because it is not a part of the original Hebrew text. The original Hebrew simply says that we are to commit our way to the Lord, trust Him, and He will do or bring to pass. The “it” is not supposed to be there. I have discovered that one of the greatest enemies that Christians ever face are the “Ittites.” In Deuteronomy 7:1, God instructs His people to utterly destroy the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzits, Hivites, and the Jebusites when they come into the promised land.
Well, a real giant in the land of Spirit-filled living is the battle against the “Ittites.” You know what I’m talking about. When you commit your way to the Lord, instead of trusting Him with what and how He’s going to accomplish what we have committed to Him, we spend our time worrying about HOW and WHEN He is going to do “it.” If we could just leave “it” up to Him and trust Him with how and when will find ourselves living in the “rest” of faith. If we just trust Him, we will discover that in His way and His time, He will pull “it” off perfectly. Commit your way to the Lord one situation at a time, and then trust Him, never allowing the “Ittites” to defeat you.
