Servant Series Part 4 Servant Connection
In Part 2, we looked at the authority Abraham’s servant was given and the parallel with the authority we are given to pray in Jesus’ name. As I’ve continued to meditate on that, these verses from Mark 9 came to mind
28 When He came into the house, His disciples began asking Him privately, “Why is it that we could not cast it out?” 29 And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything except prayer.
This is an example of one of those times when you have the authority, but you won’t know what to do unless you have that intimate connection with the One whose authority you are using, and you allow the One to work through you. The disciples went out and did what Jesus had instructed, but this one demon could not be cast out even when they followed His general instructions. There is never a formula that works; it is always God at work through us. So for this case, though it appeared the same as all the others to the disciples, it was not. It required them to be connected and in communication with the Father to know what the difference was and how to deal with it. I guess you could say it was one of those cases not expressly covered in the “handbook,” so it required them to rely on the source of the “handbook.
The servant said, “Lord, you are the God of my master Abraham. Please show your kindness to my master by helping me find a wife for his son Isaac. (Genesis 24:12 ERV)
We see Abraham’s servant take the time to connect with God about his mission and to depend on God to accomplish it. I believe this prayer for help in verse 12 opened the door for God to whisper to his spirit the very specific sign that he then requested as he continued to pray. Then the servant stepped out in faith, trusting God to accomplish the mission through him, and we see later that God did just that.
