It’s been a couple of months since we hit pause on our series about Abraham’s servant, but I would like to pick it back up. I’m backtracking a bit to revisit Genesis 24:10 because something new stood out to me today.
Verse two says that Abraham’s oldest servant “had charge of all that he [Abraham] owned.” It was this servant Abraham charged with finding a wife for Isaac from among his relatives back in his country. Then in Genesis 24:10, it says, “the servant took ten camels from the camels of his master, and went out with a variety of good things of his master’s in his hand.”
Take note of the order of things. Abraham’s Servant (Let’s call him A.S. for short.) already had all the resources he could possibly need before Abraham charged him with this mission. Abraham was wealthy, and A.S. was in charge of it all; it was all at his disposal. Doesn’t that sound familiar? Ephesians 1:3 says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”
We, as Christians, have every spiritual blessing. We are co-heirs with Christ. All the resources of God’s Kingdom are at our disposal. Isn’t that amazing?! That means when God gives us a mission, He has already given us ALL that we need to fulfill the assignment.
The verse also tells us that there was a variety. All those gifts of the Spirit are at our disposal. And A.S. had “GOOD THINGS of His master’s”; we have all those spiritual blessings. And sometimes we even get to choose what we want to take with us/use.
We find out later that A.S. chooses things that would be appealing to a bride and her family and would also demonstrate the wealth and ability of his master to take good care of a wife and family. It sounds like 1 Corinthians 14:12 to me: “So you too, since you are eager to possess spiritual gifts, strive to excel for the edification of the church.”
In Christ, we have access to all that is the Father’s in order to do as the Father would; we are to have the heart of Christ and use what we have to love as He loved; to serve. A.S. used his access to all that belonged to his master to excel in serving his master. You could also say he was displaying the character of his master. When we use the gifts and blessings bestowed upon us in Christ, the Father is glorified; we put the Father’s “wealth,” power, and heart on display for the world to see. They get to see the true nature of our God, who loves them so.
What a picture of servanthood in Christ!
