Philippians 4:11,13 NASB95
Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content and confident in whatever circumstances I am. [13] I can do all things through (literally “in”) Him who strengthens me.
Someone has said, in describing the gospel, “We have been woven into the fabric of Jesus’s existence.” Because you have been woven into the fabric of the life and existence of Jesus, He has been woven into the fabric of your life and existence. The foundation of our walk with God is the fact that “Christ is our life.” As our life, therefore, the Christ who is in all, is all. Colossians 3:11. It is Christ alone who can live the Christian life in participation with our humanity.
There was a moment when I was encountering a negative circumstance (it wasn’t a severe or dramatic one, but it was negative), that the Lord spoke in me, “This situation doesn’t change the truth of who I am.” This is what Paul was saying in Philippians 4. He could be content in whatever circumstance he found himself in because he could do all things in Christ, who continually strengthened him. I love the way the Amplified New Testament translates Philippians 4:11, 13; “Not that I am implying that I was in any personal want, for I have learned how to be content (satisfied to the point where I am not disturbed or disquieted) and whatever circumstance I am in. I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am more than sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency].” You see, if Christ is your life, and it is Christ who is living His life through you in every circumstance you find yourself in, then the only thing that matters is that the circumstance doesn’t change the truth of who Christ is, and therefore who Christ is in you. He is not rattled or frustrated in any circumstance therefore, you can just “sink into” (in trusting surrender to) how He feels and thinks in the midst of every situation. You can be content in every circumstance because Jesus is content in every circumstance. The truth (Jesus) sets us free. This is not just freedom for the child of God; it is glorious freedom.
