Do you want Jesus to be your therapist or your liberator? It is true that Jesus is a wonder as a counselor – Isaiah 9:6 – and because He is such a wonder, He is able to set you totally free. As a matter of fact, He actually accomplished your glorious freedom 2000 years ago on the cross, when you’re broken, dysfunctional, fallen false self was crucified in Him, and in His resurrection, in union with His glorious liberty, a new self came forth. It was for freedom’s sake that He set us free (past tense) – Galatians 5:1. The goal of Jesus’s finished work was not to enroll us into a perpetual therapy session; instead, It was to liberate us from the reign of sin. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for Christian counseling and therapy as long as there is an in game that leads to us perpetually (daily) entering into the wholeness of Jesus. Salvation is our inclusion in the life of Christ and His wholeness, and though He nurtures us in our disappointments and discouragement; He counsels us by calling us forth to abide in the disappointment and discouragement-free life that He lives. Victorious Christianity is not measured by how transparent we are concerning our pain. Victorious Christianity is measured by the life and disposition of Jesus. Victorious Christianity – authentic Christianity – is the life of Jesus and, therefore, the disposition of Jesus concerning all things daily lived out in us. Jesus is a healer and liberator, and that is what makes Him such a wonderful counselor. Have you discovered Jesus as your indwelling liberator, or do you still think of Him as your consoling therapist?
