The Way 10/21/24 The abiding life

How much does Jesus love you? How you answer that question will go a long way in determining if you are able to abide in Christ. Remember, every Christian is in Christ, but every Christian doesn’t necessarily abide in Christ. John 15:10 says, “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.” I think it would be impossible to put into human language any kind of valid description of how much the Father loves Jesus. Therefore, it is impossible to put into human language how much Jesus loves you because He loves you in the same way the Father loves Him.

The word “abide” literally means “to remain” or “stay.” It carries the idea of “settling into, being present to, resting in.” Jesus is calling us to settle into, be continually present to (conscious of), and rest in the reality of how much He loves us. Previous to verse 10, Jesus references the phrase “Abide in Me” five times. To abide in Christ is to settle into, be consciously present to, and trustingly rest in Christ Himself, living in you, facing every temptation and situation through you. To the degree that you restfully trust in His love for you will be the degree to which you will restfully trust in the adequacy and faithfulness of His life in you. Galatians 5:6 says, “… faith works through love.” Perfect love casts out fear, and if you abide in that perfect love (trusting in His immeasurable love for you), then you will be able to trust in being lost in His life being lived out through your life and your life story, step-by-step. Someone who loves you that much can be trusted.
