Often God will let you experience extremities so He can manifest His adequacy.  The times we are testing God, He is actually testing us.  The greatest sin towards God is unbelief. Wilderness places are God's preparation so we can explore and appropriate all the inheritance that is ours in the Lord; to teach us to live by faith.
