Ephesians 5:15-20 NASB [15] Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, [16] making the most of your time, because the days are evil. [17] So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. [18] And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, [19] speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; [20] always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, n even the Father; …Let’s look at a few things in these verses about the will of God for us. Paul says if we want to be people of wisdom, instead of being foolish people, and if we want to make the most of our time, then we need to commit ourselves to doing the will of God every moment of our day. He then makes it very clear and simple what the will of God is; “be continually filled with the Holy Spirit.” That’s life made simple. If you want to be wise, and you don’t want to waste your time, then live every minute of your day filled with the Holy Spirit. This idea of being continually filled with the Holy Spirit can sound a little bit ethereal, but it is actually very practical and simple. The Holy Spirit’s primary role in our lives is to bear witness of the fullness of Christ in us, and through us; therefore to be continually filled the Holy Spirit is to simply continually allow Jesus Christ to live his life through us in whatever context he chooses to live. Jesus lives, by the person the Holy Spirit, a supernatural life through us, and when I say that I don’t just mean a life of signs and wonders. Most of our lives are spent in the “mundane” of everyday life and it is just as supernatural for Christ to manifest in us and through us patience, peace, joy, love, etc., as much as it is for him to demonstrate his capacity to heal the sick through us. God’s will for you and me is to enjoy and manifest the supernaturally victorious life of Christ in whatever story line he’s choosing to live in for each particular day, and in each particular moment of the day.The Wonderful consequence of living the spirit filled life is that even when the days are evil, the sounds of victory will come forth from our heart in songs, and hymns, and spiritual songs, making melody with our hearts toward toward the Lord, giving thanks for all things. That sounds like a really happy life. That is the attitude and the sound of someone living in victory. This is God’s will for you. It is time for so many Christians to quit being concerned about whether they’re doing something relevant for God, and being told that they have to do some big thing that the world considers relevant. We’ve got to understand that God’s will is for us to simply experience and manifest the victorious life of Christ, and it doesn’t matter what we’re doing as that’s happening. You can be praying for the sick, or changing a diaper, or standing in line at the post office, but God’s will is the same in all those situations. In that moment continue to be filled with the Holy Spirit. You’re not wasting your life but doing something small, but you might be wasting your life by not allowing Jesus to be big and all the small things that you do. He’s the one who’s relevant, and it is his story to tell through you, and it doesn’t matter what’s going on around you, what you might be doing, all that matters is the one who’s doing it. If you are simply allowing Jesus to be the one who’s doing it for you then you have discovered the path of the spirit filled life which is hilariously joyful and victorious.
