Hebrews 12:1-2 NASB [1] Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, [2] fixing a our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Three different times in Scripture we are told that the just shall live by faith. Our walk with God is the walk of faith and Hebrews 11:6 says, “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” Romans 14:23 actually says, “That which is not of faith is sin.” So obviously, faith is a big deal in the Christian life and one of the questions that many Christians ask themselves is “how do I grow in faith?” That’s actually a very good question because, if there is a way to get more faith, then that would be very important.
The first thing that we have to know is that we can’t get more faith by focusing on our faith. As a matter-of-fact, you can’t get more faith by trying to get more faith. Faith happens as we get our eyes off of ourselves and fix them on Jesus, who is faithful. 2 Timothy 2:13b says, “if we believe not, He remains faithful; for He cannot deny Himself.”
Faith is keeping your eyes on Him and resting in the fact that He, as Lord, will be faithful to be Himself in every situation. We grow from glory to glory, not by beholding our faith, but by beholding His glory (His attributes).
