[27] There is Benjamin, the youngest, (smallest) ruling them, The princes of Judah in their throng, The princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali. …
In this great processional that is described here it is interesting to note that Benjamin, or those of the tribe of Benjamin are in the position of ruling. The word “youngest” used here can either mean youngest or, “smallest.” As I’m sure you know Benjamin was the youngest son of Rachel, and by this time the tribe of Benjamin had almost been wiped out in the time of the judges, and they were also therefore the smallest, not just the youngest. Why would God choose Benjamin who was the smallest and the youngest to rule in this procession? I think is important understand how God operates. God never looks at the outward appearance, but he always looks at the heart, and that which motivates God to elevate a person into a place of presiding has nothing to do with how adequate, or capable a person is. To understand why God selected Benjamin to be in a position of ruling is important to understand the anointing of the tribe of Benjamin carried because of the blessing of Moses over them. Look at Deuteronomy 33:12, and you will gain insight into what influences God.
“Of Benjamin he said, May the Beloved of the Lord dwell in security by Him, Who shields him all the day, and he dwells between His shoulders.”
The tribe of Benjamin was called “the tribe of the presence,” and because intimacy with God’s presence was the priority of Benjamin, God was able to raise up the tribe to a position of leadership. The blessing of Benjamin was to be the beloved of God, called to dwell in his presence; to dwell between God’s shoulders. What an amazing blessing. I would encourage you to pray for the blessing of Benjamin to be on your own life and the lives of those who are connected to your heart. In John 13 John the Beloved laid his head on the breast of Christ, and from that point forward he always referred to himself as the disciple who Jesus was always loving. This is the abiding life. Not just in the place of prayer, though of course the abiding life is cultivated there, but to live every conscious moment, no matter what might be going on around you, resting intimately in and on His Presence. To abide in Him in the secret place of intimacy, and to abide intimately in Him in the public place is what it means to Dwell Between His Shoulders. Why did God raise Benjamin up to a position of ruling? It is quite simple; those who make His presence their passion, position themselves for promotion. Those who ABIDE, PRESIDE.
