Psalm 145:9 “The LORD is good to everyone and his mercies extend to everything he does.”
Over the years I’ve read and listened to so many people trying to explain the deep things of God. It is true that the infinite God’s ways are unsearchable, yet He longs for us to understand His ways. Without that understanding it is impossible cooperate in His purposes. We may not always comprehend all the details, but there are a few simple things that God discloses about Himself so that we can walk in faith. These simple, foundational revelations about His character and intentions, are the truths we rest on when total understanding seems beyond us, a confusion and fear want to creep in.
This particular verse reveals the two truths that are at the heart of my understanding about God. On those two things, everything else I know about Him is built on, and when I find myself not understanding what He is up to, these simple truths are the reality I fall back on. These are the most simple, and yet the deepest things I know. It goes like this; GOD IS REALLY BIG, and GOD IS REALLY GOOD. He is LORD, (He reigns) and His MERCY (Goodness) is behind everything He does. In ever situation you face, no matter how disappointing it may feel, you can trust that He is on His throne high and lifted up, and that He is involved in your every detail, extending His mercies.
The Hebrew word for GOOD in that verse comes from the word WOMB. In other words, God is always in control, and His is wanting to birth mercy and goodness into every circumstance. Isn’t that what He says in Psalm 23, “His goodness, and loving kindness (mercy) will follow me all the days of my life.”
