Hope is such an important part of our emotional survival kit in this fallen world. Proverbs says that “hope deferred makes the heart sick,” and Hebrews says that “hope is the anchor of our soul.” In this world of shifting, and the unexpected, having an anchor is so very important, so that we aren’t tossed about by every contrary wind that comes our way. Contemplate these verses from Hebrews.
Hebrews 6:12 so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.13 For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply you.” 15 And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16 For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. 19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul…
Our anchor, our hope, is in the unchangeableness of God’s promises. The two unchangeable things verse 18 refers to are the fact that when God makes a promise, it is an oath. He actually swears by the character of His own name every time He speaks a promise into your heart. Secondly, it is impossible for the One who made the promise to lie. Notice the word “impossible.” The encouragement in these verses is to not lose hope, even if everything appears lost.
Through faith AND PATIENCE you WILL inherit the promises. Our hope is founded on His oath and His inability to lie when He makes an oath, so add patience to your faith. Act like it is so, when it isn’t so, in order for it to be so, cause you know it is so, He said its so, with Patience.
Wake everyday praising God that His promises and purposes are the great certainty in this life, not what you see, hear, or feel.
