1 Peter 2:24 NASB
and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
Romans 6:5-7 NASB
For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, [6] knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; [7] for he who has died is freed from sin.
Romans 8:2 NASB
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
The last part of that verse in 1st Peter 2 is a quote from Isaiah 53. Most people when they are quoting those words “for by His wounds you were healed,” use it to reference the physical healing that Jesus secured for us in his finished work at the Cross, but the only place in the New Testament where that phrase is quoted is here in 1 Peter, and Peter is talking about being healed from the power of sin to destroy our lives. I am not trying to say that this phrase in Isaiah 53 can’t be applied to physical healing, but what I am saying is that 1st and foremost it is talking about being healed of the devastation of sins ability to control our lives. The most destructive thing in the world is not sickness, though I passionately believe that it is God’s will for people to be healed; but the most destructive force in the world is sin. There is another verse that is often quoted by Christians to promote the truth that Jesus came to set people free from things like sickness, and demonic oppression, and of course I believe he has come to do those things, but this verse from 1 John 3:8 is first and most importantly talking about Jesus destroying the power sin, which is the darkest and most destructive work of the devil. 1 John 3:7-8 NASB “Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; [8] the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.”
What I’m really wanting you to see from all the verses that I quoted above, is that Jesus came to set you free from sin, and He accomplished that 2000 years ago in his finished work at the Cross. By taking you into His person to the Cross your sins were paid for in Him in His death. His death for sin, was your death for sin, and therefore, you never have to fear sins condemnation again, or it’s power. All of us guilty sinners died in Christ at the cross, and all of our sins were paid for; past, present, and future. Because Jesus took you into His person at the Cross 2000 years ago, not only were your sins paid for, but you the Sinner was put to death and buried, and you are raised up in union with Jesus, sharing His life as your very life. That life that you have now in Christ is a life of the righteousness of God. You are no longer slaves to sin. You have been healed of that condition. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. You do not have to spend any more time begging God to set you free from sin or to heal your sinful condition and bondage, because, by His grace 2000 years ago, you were already healed. Our minds need to be renewed, and we need to come into agreement with the mind of Christ concerning sins place in our life. The Christian life is a life of faith, and step-by-step, in childlike faith, we must stop begging God to heal us from any particular sin’s power, and instead, we must start celebrating the fact, one temptation at a time, that He already has.
