Rev. 3:20 ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.
Rev. 4:1 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things.”
Notice the contrast between these two verses. 3:20 speaks of God knocking on a closed door, while 4:1 reveals a door that is continually standing open. I know that many use 3:20 as an evangelistic verse to lead the unsaved to Christ, and that is fine. I’ve done that myself many times, but 3:20 is written to believers whose hearts have become casual toward Him. He is longing to fellowship with them at an intensified level and is knocking on a door that has been closed.
Again, in contrast, the door of His heart remains open to us, for unlike us toward Him, His extravagant and intense longing for us never wanes or wavers. His heart never stops burning for us with an infinite flame and He so wants our hearts to perpetually burn for Him in an ever increasing way.Nothing is more tragic than to see a Christian live a lukewarm life before a God who invites us all into the fellowship of His burning heart.
I’m so grateful today that according to Revelation 4:1, His heart is never lukewarm toward me. Not only does His heart not become lukewarm, the thought of us coming into His presence causes His voice to become excited as He trumpets His invitation to us to come close. I think of that chorus by Tim Reimherr, “You are so good; You never leave when I think You should. You are so kind; with all You see, You still give me life.”
Burn for Him today.
