Rev. 4:1-2 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things.” Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne was standing in heaven, and One sitting on the throne.
Sometimes it feels like everything is just spinning out of control and you have no say so about what’s happening, or is about to happen. The feeling of helplessness is one of the worst feelings ever. That’s why the truths in these two verses are so powerful and encouraging.
God invited John to see reality from Heavens perspective, which is always life changing. There’s a lot of awesome things John saw, but for our purposes today there are four things I want you to notice.
First, John saw a throne. Thrones speak of government, rule, and order.
Second, John saw One sitting on the throne. Only One governs all creation, and that is God. Satan is not His co-equal. Satan has some authority on this earth, but it’s only because the One who sits on the throne allows it. In the end, it will all (even the devils activity) sum up Christ (It will all add up to Jesus’ purposes and glory).
Third, He is sitting. He is at rest. There is no anxiety, or panic with Him.
Fourth, He is at rest because according to verse one He already knows what’s coming. He doesn’t just know it, he says “I will show you what MUST take place.” That sounds like rule, not just knowledge of the future. He is in control (not the Devil), He is sovereign over the future, and He is totally at rest about it.
Instead of feeling anxious and helpless, let’s celebrate His sovereign reign, climb up into His lap, and enter into His rest, and peace.
