Heb. 4:9 There remains therefore a rest to the people of God.
Heb. 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also has ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
Heb. 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
God’s offer of rest is one of the great grace offers in scripture. I’ve heard so many explanations about what spiritual Rest is all about that it can get confusing and complicated. The whole concept of Rest should indicate that it can’t be complicated and difficult to understand, because that wouldn’t be very restful trying to figure it out.
The last word in verse 11 helps us understand what it means to Rest in The Lord. The word ‘unbelief’ is used here to define what happens when you haven’t entered into Rest, therefore obviously then, Resting is believing or trusting. If you are anxious, fearful, worried, fretful, trying to manipulate situations or people, then you aren’t Resting. True faith, authentic believing, always results in emotional and mental Resting.
The bottom line is, no matter what it looks like or initially feels like, do you believe He is Big Enough, or does He need your mental and emotional tension and push to make sure it all will be o.k? Are you CONVINCED; do you KNOW that He is able and WILL BE victorious in every situation? Do you realize, in His eternal sense of time, He has already DONE IT, and all you have to do is Restfully trust Him and see what HE ALREADY DID, as it manifests in your time and space. Nothing catches Him by surprise, and nothing threatens Him, or makes Him anxious.
By the way, if you are IN HIM, just sit back and relax in His CONFIDENCE and REST. The Holy Spirit did say to “enter into His Rest.” Can you imagine how confident and Restful He is about your circumstances?
Psa. 110:1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Psa. 110:2 The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies
Notice what these verse say. He, Jesus, RULES (verse 2) from a RESTING position. (If you have your feet on a footstool, then you are resting in a chair). Of course, His chair is a throne and, also of course, you are seated with Him in the Heavenly places RESTING on that Throne. So just sit back in Him and enjoy Reigning in life through The One Christ Jesus.
