Jn.19:28, Jesus knew that His mission was accomplished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said: “I am thirsty.”
30When He had sipped the sour wine He said, “It is finished, My bride!”
34But one of the soldiers took a spear and pierced Jesus’ side, and blood and water gushed out!
When Jesus said “It is finished,” He wasn’t just saying our debt was paid in full; He was declaring that once and for all the true nature of God’s love had been revealed. He was saying, “We’ve done it, Father. We’ve shown the whole world your goodness. We’ve revealed your heart.” You see, at the Cross, God didn’t change His mind about us, and decide to not be mad at us any longer. At the Cross, Jesus revealed what the Father already thought and felt about us. Rom. 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” He didn’t wait to love us after the Cross. While we were still sinners He demonstrated His thoughts and feelings for humanity. He didn’t change. The result of His goodness revealed at the Cross was meant to change us, and our thoughts and feelings toward Him. Jesus’ words were communicating that nothing else can be done to add to the revelation of His love and desire for us. Of course His holiness was satisfied by His son’s sacrifice on the Cross; but also His heart and His true nature, as the one who IS LOVE, was and is revealed.
