1 Corinthians 1:2 NASB To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
Romans 11:29 NASB for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
The word in Romans 11 “irrevocable” doesn’t just carry the idea of something that will not change, but at its root it means to have no regrets.
We are called to be saints as people who are in Christ, and that calling will never go away, and no matter how much we struggle, God never regrets his calling on our life to be saints. In Christ, we are holy ones positionally, but we were also called to live as saints practically.
Remember who the enemy is! He is a liar, and he is the accuser of the brethren. Whenever Christian fail, especially if it’s a failure of repeated sin, the enemy will accuse the believer, and will tell him that there’s no hope for him or her to ever change. The enemy will speak religious things to us when we fail, and it is easy to confuse his voice for God’s. Because we feel guilty for our failure we believe that it is God who is heaping condemnation and accusation on us, because we feel like that is what we deserve. The truth is, the Holy Spirit does convict us of our sin, and that conviction can break our hearts, but God never piles accusation and condemnation on his people. Instead, in the midst of holy sorrow over our failure, God is there reminding us that the calling on us to be saints is not over, and has not changed one bit. He reminds us that he feels no regret or sorrow for calling us to be holy ones. I remember one time when being especially frustrated with myself because of some attitude or some sin that I had surrendered to again, the voice in my head was just beating me up over my failure, and though I had walked with the Lord for many years, I actually thought this was God having a conversation with me about how disappointed he was, and what a disappointment I had turned out to be. At some point, in this conversation with the enemy, which at the moment I thought was God, God broke in, and his trumpeting voice pierced through the accusations and said to me, “Chuck this is not my voice. I’m not concerned with accusing you and beating you up. My son died for you to liberate you from sins slavery. My relationship with you is to always be calling you forth into wholeness, and the manifestation of the fullness of Christ. That’s what I’m after. I’m not after trying to make you feel bad; instead, I’m here to remind you that I believe in you, and that I have no regrets about calling you to be a saint, and that calling has not changed, and I’ve sent the Holy Spirit into your life to reveal Jesus to you and to lead you into all truth about walking in Christ likeness.”
I believe this is one of the most important truths you will ever understand. The gifts and the calling of God is something that God never regrets or goes back on. He doesn’t stand over you to judge your performance, instead, he has sent the Holy Spirit to live inside of you to change your performance, and he is always calling you forth, instead of putting you down
