Song 1:15 ¶ “How beautiful you are, my darling,
How beautiful you are!
Your eyes are like doves.”
Song 1:16 ¶ “How handsome you are, my beloved,
And so pleasant!
Indeed, our couch is luxuriant!
Song 2:1 ¶ “I am the rose of Sharon,
The lily of the valleys.”
Song 2:2 ¶ “Like a lily among the thorns,
So is my darling among the maidens.”
Song 2:3 ¶ “Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest,
So is my beloved among the young men.
In his shade I took great delight and sat down,
And his fruit was sweet to my taste.
Someone has said that the key to holiness is falling in love. Twice in verse 15 Jesus refers to us as the “most beautiful.” He repeats Himself as if it is necessary for us to hear it again and again, because it is so hard for us to believe. Jesus is bestowing on us our true identity in His eyes, so that we can be healed of our fallen identity that is the result of our sin, and Satan’s accusations. Jesus sees each of us as his favorite. The sequence of these Scriptures give us insight into an amazing process. The more He speaks into our lives of how wonderful we are in his eyes, and that we are His favorites, our hearts begin to awaken toward Him, and He begins to become the love of our life. He becomes our favorite. Verse 16 is the believers response to Jesus convincing him or her of how glorious they are to Him. If you remember, the word “How,” can actually be translated as the word “Wow.” In verse 15 Jesus said repeatedly “Wow, how beautiful you are,” when speaking about us. In verse 16 as a response the believer is now able to say “Wow, how handsome you are my beloved.” He is becoming her favorite. He is becoming her Beloved. In response to His great love for us, He starts to emerge as the love of our life. When someone is your favorite, or something is your favorite item, you simply treat them, or it differently. This is the foundation of true holiness. Not the holiness of fear, but the holiness of a lovesick heart is what Jesus is desires. As He emerges as the love of your life, you simply never treat Him the same again.
