Song 1:15 ¶ “How beautiful you are, my darling,
How beautiful you are!
Your eyes are like doves.”
Song 1:16 ¶ “How handsome you are, my beloved,
And so pleasant!
Indeed, our couch is luxuriant!
This is such a remarkable exchange between Christ and the love of His life. Of, course you do know that is who you are, don’t you, for you are truly the love of His life. Everything He went through, beginning with the Incarnation, was to have you as His own. After Adam and Eve fell He could have just started over, but He couldn’t. Lovesickness had already captivated His heart, and He had no choice at all but to pursue us unto death. The Hebrew word “How” is not a passive word at all. It is an exclamation mark word. It means “Lo’!!! Or Behold!!” It carries the idea in English of “WOW!!!” Haven’t you always wanted someone to always think WOW!!, whenever they think about you, or every time they see you. He speaks these amazing words twice, because that’s how He feels about us, and He knows that we need to hear them over and over again, because we try so hard to not believe the truth about how madly in love He is, because we so dislike ourselves, in guilt and shame. Remember, He feels this way about you, already knowing that you are “dark.” Your imperfections aren’t news to Him. He feels “Wow” about you in light of all you are. He knows your weaknesses better than you do, yet every morning when you wake up the first thing you should hear is Him saying over you “Wow,” as He invites you to spend another day in His presence.
