One Thing 8/17/16

2 Sam.23:13, Then three of the thirty chief men went down and came to David in the harvest time to the cave of Adullam, while the troop of the Philistines was camping in the valley of Rephaim. 14 David was then in the stronghold, while the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. 15 David had a craving and said, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem which is by the gate!” 16 So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David. Nevertheless he would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD; 17 and he said, “Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of the men who went in jeopardy of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.

Just a reminder of what a true worshiper is according Romans 12. A true worshipper is someone who lives every moment radically, and joyfully surrendered to the will of God. Every act in life is a “service of worship” to those who are lovesick. This kind of heart is played out perfectly, in type, by the three mighty men of David. See David as a type of Christ and the three men as lovesick followers of Christ. The Hebrew indicates that when David voiced his craving for a drink from the well of Bethlehem (which he drank from often as a young boy), it was barely a whisper, not meant for others to hear. These men were the closest in relationship to David. They were so close, they picked up on  the whispers of his heart desires; and they were so devoted to him that they were passionately committed to fulfilling his slightest wishes, no matter what it might cost them. What a perfect picture of a true worshipper. A person so committed wholeheartedly to intimacy with Jesus, that you become close enough to hear His whispers; and so passionate to fulfill His slightest wishes that you’ll pay any price in extravagant obedience. When they brought the water to David, he poured it out as a drink offering to God, because he saw their act as such an extraordinary sacrifice of devotion. Wow!!! He is looking for such worshippers.
