Luke 3:21-22 ESV
Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, [22] and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Jesus as the Lamb of God took on the form of a bondservant, being made in the likeness of men, Philippians 2:7. The Holy Spirit took on the form of a dove, and the Father revealed Himself as “Abba” as He spoke out of heaven into humanity, “You are my beloved; with you, I am well pleased.” Why do I say that the Father spoke into humanity when obviously He was speaking to His Son Jesus? I say that because as second Adam, Jesus represented the entire human race as we were meant to be in Him. He clothed Himself in our flesh, and the Spirit and the Father saw in Jesus normal humanity, in union with Christ staring back at Him (true image bearers once again). In some ancient, mystical way, we were there in Christ, and the word spoken to Jesus were God’s words spoken over us. It was God’s “very good” spoken to the new creation. It was God’s “You are my beloved” spoken into our perceived “forsakenness.” When you say yes to the gospel, you are able to celebrate as those in Christ your “belovedness.” You don’t have to work towards earning that reality. Instead, you can live in freedom from truth. You are the beloved of God because Jesus is. You were immersed into the Sonship of Jesus. The Trinity was there in the baptism of Jesus, giving expression to the “divine madness” of their lovesickness for fallen and broken humanity. Think of it, in that moment, how vulnerable the Trinity was; The Lamb, The Dove, and Abba in humble pursuit and with infinite pleasure, marking us with our new identity in Christ. I don’t understand it all, but what I do understand makes me want to worship or cry, or maybe cry as I worship.
