Mark 4:35-40 NASB
On that day, when evening came, He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side.” [36] Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. [37] And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. [38] Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” [39] And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and there was a great calm. [40] And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
Hebrews 4:9-10 NASB
So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. [10] For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.
God does not just offer us rest; he offers us to enter into His rest. How gloriously wonderful His rest is. Can you imagine the peace that God experiences in his heart, and soul. Not just freedom from anxiety, worry and fear, but the absolute shalom of God residing in your heart. Look at this story above, because it gives a perfect picture of the rest of God being manifested in the life of Jesus. Jesus only did those things he saw the Father doing, and he only said those things he heard the Father saying. Obviously Jesus knew that the Father wanted to go to the other side of the lake, and therefore by faith, he spoke that to his disciples. When the storm hit, Jesus was in the stern of the boat soundly asleep, because he had no concern as to whether they were going to survive the storm are not. He was in the father, and the father was in him, and therefore he was totally confident in the adequacy of the Father to get the boat to the other side, because he already knew it was the father’s will to go there. Jesus was resting in the father’s ability to carry out the father’s will. Jesus was in union with the father, and you and I are in union with Jesus, and therefore everything that he calls us to do we can absolutely rest in his adequacy to do it. Jesus knew the boat could not sink regardless of how severe the storm was, because the Father was bigger than the storm. The disciples were full of anxiety and fear, and when they finally got Jesus’s attention, and the storm was stopped, it says there was a great calm. There was a great calm after the storm was stopped, but Jesus knew a great calm in his heart while the storm was still raging. This is the life of knowing His Rest. Sadly, most Christians live the Christian life freaking out in the midst of storms, begging Jesus to make them stop, and then only being calm in their heart when the storm has ceased. Supernatural Christianity lived out of union with Christ is knowing the great calm even while the storm is blowing. Even a lost person can know peace when there are no storms, but only someone abiding in Christ can know perfect peace during the storm, because they are trusting in the illimitable adequacy of Jesus for every situation.
