Ephesians 6:17 NASB
[17] And take the HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
The sword of the Spirit is the sixth piece of the armor of God, and is the one piece that is primarily offensive. The Holy Spirit has a sword and that sword is a supernatural Excalibar that can cut through and destroy every assault from the enemy. Paul defines the sword of the Spirit as the “word“ of God. This is the Greek word “Rhema,” not “Logos.” Rhema is a specific personal word, or revelation (insight), or promise God has given you. Look at these verses in Ezekiel 1:1-3
[1] Now it came about in the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was by the river Chebar among the exiles, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God. [2] (On the fifth of the month in the fifth year of King Jehoiachin’s exile, [3] the word of the LORD came expressly (fashioned) to Ezekiel the priest, son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and there the hand of the LORD came upon him.) The Hebrew word “expressly” literally means ‘a fashioned word.’ A Rhema word is when God speaks a word fashioned just for your heart, and understanding.
A perfect example of a Rhema word being put to use in battle would be the temptation of Christ in the wilderness. For 40 days Jesus was being tempted, and towards the end of the time of testing the enemy poured it on with great intensity. Jesus waged war against him by quoting scriptures, but I believe they weren’t just scriptures that Jesus had memorized, but that they were insights into God‘s word, and promises that the Father had already implanted into him. As we cultivate a life behind the veil, The Lord will reveal insights into His ways, and speak promises into our hearts; not just to bless us with knowledge of Him, though that is wonderful, and transformative; but also to prepare us for future battles that we don’t yet see. When the angel Gabriel announced to young Mary that she was going to give birth to the Messiah, she asked the question “How,” in light of the fact that she was a virgin. The Archangel said, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you…“ he then said, “For not any word will be impossible with God.” The word for “word” here is Rhema, and Mary responded by saying, “Behold the bond slave of the Lord; be done to me according to your word (Rhema).” The angel was telling Mary that when God speaks a personal word, or promise into your heart, no impossibilities can keep it from coming to pass, or stand against it. Her response was her confession of faith when she said “be done to me according to your Rhema.”
Very simply, in the midst of the battle we stand and declare those things that God has revealed to us personally as truth. The enemy often tries to deceive us into believing a lie, by stirring up our emotions, but we don’t live by our emotions; we live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, spoken to our hearts.
2 Thessalonians 2:8 NASB
[8] Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the manifestation of His presence;
We slay the enemy, and the demonic forces that attack, by the manifestation of His presence on our lives, and His Rhema word on our lips.
2 Corinthians 4:13 NASB
[13] But having the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I BELIEVED, THEREFORE I SPOKE,” we also believe, therefore we also speak,
