Jn.4:1-4 Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were), 3 He left Judea and went away again into Galilee. 4 And He had to pass through Samaria.
According to Jn.1:18, Jesus came to reveal the truth about God. The great truth that Jesus told about God over and over again was how “good” He is. The Jews believed God to be angry, and rightfully so, because people are so sinful, therefore God was seen primarily as “Heavenly Punisher.” Jesus came to tell the truth (He was the truth) about God, that He is “Heavenly Father.” In those first few verses of this remarkable chapter we see Jesus at the height of His popularity. His ministry was growing exponentially. Even the followers of John the Baptist were leaving John’s ministry to follow Jesus. When Jesus heard that the Pharisees had heard of His success, instead of going to the waiting crowds in Jerusalem, He turned aside and HAD TO pass through Samaria to a small out of the way place called Sychar. Here He met one lonely, broken woman whose life was transformed forever as a result of encountering Jesus, and the extravagant love of God He carried.
One of the things you notice from this amazing story about Jesus, and therefore The Heavenly Father He came to reveal; is that even though He loves the world, He lived, and lives for the one. Remember who this “one” was. She was a broken, shame-filled person who lived in constant disgrace. She was the most important person in history to Jesus, and because of that her history was redeemed, and her future was restored.
She is you, and me. Even at your worst you are the most important person in history to your Heavenly Father. His one priority is to stop everything and come to you in His Shocking Goodness, and Love, and Transforming Hope. He is the “Heavenly Lover, and Restorer.” It’s just who He is. It’s just who you are to Him.
