2 Corinthians 13:4-5 NASB95
For indeed, He was crucified because of weakness (the weakness of His humanity), yet He lives by of the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, yet we will live in union with Him by of the power of God … [5] Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test?
Jesus laid down his right to act out of his deity, for he came as the second Adam, the Son of Man. As The Son of Man, Jesus lived in union with the Father and acknowledged that he did nothing on his own initiative, but it was the Father abiding in Him who did the works. John 14:10
According to Hebrews 12, Jesus was the author and the perfecter of faith. As Man, everything Jesus did He did in absolute surrender to the Father’s will and in utter dependence on the power (supernatural ability) of the Father who lived in Him.
That verse in 2 Corinthians 13:4 should be properly translated, “For indeed He was crucified “IN” weakness, not “because” of weakness. Mankind was created to be utterly dependent on the power of God to live the life we were created to live, and Jesus perfectly demonstrated that lifestyle. He was crucified in weakness, yet today He lives by the power of God, for it was the glorious power of God that raised Him from the dead. Everything Jesus does now; He does as one who is risen from the dead living by the resurrection power of God.
Here is the mindblower, because of our union with Christ in his death and resurrection, we too, though weak and utterly dependent in our humanity in Him, live as people who are risen from the dead living in oneness with the life he lives by the power of God.
We don’t have to be embarrassed by the fact that we are weak, because the weaknesses in our humanity posture us and remind us that we have been newly created to participate in the life that Jesus lives every minute of every day in us by the power of God; the same power that conquered death.
Therefore we should never be threatened by anything that exposes how weak we are. They are just reminders of how powerful God is in us because we are in Christ. What you can, and can’t take is irrelevant. That’s never the question for the believer. The only legitimate question is, “Is He big enough for this.” Apart from Christ, it is true that you can do nothing, but you are in Christ if you are Christian, participating in His resurrection life, and therefore you can do all things in Christ who continually strengthens you with His power. Your life is now hidden with Christ in God. So never think of what you’re facing only in the context of what you, out of the weakness of your own humanity, can do or not. That is thinking from a false identity. You now live, facing every single situation, by the power of God, because you’re one with the resurrection life Jesus lives. As a matter fact, 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “in your weakness, His power is made perfect. That same verse says in light of the fact that His power is perfected in your weaknesses you should, “gladly boast about your weaknesses, that the power of Christ may be exhibited in you.” In other words, when the enemy reminds you of your weaknesses, you can boldly declare that when you are weak, then you’re at your strongest (2 Corinthians 12:10c) because being made conscious of your need simply reminds you of His overwhelming sufficiency in you to face anything. This is the liberating glory of living from Christ by His resurrection power, instead of living for Christ out of your sincere, but weak humanity.
