Ephesians 6:10-13 NASB
[10] Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. [11] Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. [12] For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. [13] Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. …
These four verses represent the introduction to putting on the full armor of God. The two words “put on“ literally mean in the original language, “Sink into.” Take a look at Romans 13:14,
“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.”
The words “put on” here are the same, and the armor is Jesus. Paul has already established in the first three chapters of Ephesians that we are in Christ, and now he is saying in light of the spiritual warfare that will come against every believer, we are to simply sink into the spiritual armor which is Christ. Again, this is the armor of God, not an armor that God gives us, and the 6 pieces of the armor are simply aspects of Jesus that are relevant to us in the midst of battle. This what verse 10 is shouting. Let me give you a good translation of verse 10, in light of the words, and the grammar used here. It is the amplified version with a little more added expansion. Ephesians 6:10 AMP “In conclusion, be strong in the Lord( allow yourself to be in powered, enabled with His ability [draw your strength from Him and be empowered through your union with Him] and in the power(manifest force) of His [boundless] might(staying power).”
When Paul calls us to stand firm in the battle, he’s not asking us to grit our teeth, and to do our best to endure the conflict. Just the opposite, he is asking us to sink into Jesus, and His supernatural ability, and His force to stand firm, holding our place of victory, already won. Can you see it? BE STRONG IN THE LORD. As people “in the Lord” (IN CHRIST) be enabled with His ability to stand when the winds of battle are blowing the strongest against us.
