The Christian is never stronger or a bigger threat to the enemy than when he is aware of his own weaknesses. It is when he is aware of his vulnerability that he leans into his beloved, and allows the power of Christ to be on display in his or her humanity. The enemy makes the same mistake again and again by attacking the Christian at “opportune times,” exposing the Christian’s weakness because it is then that the believer retreats to his fortress, confessing with renewed humility that Jesus is his refuge and his strength. When we are weak, then we are strong. It seems illogical that strength should find its highest perfection in weakness, but this contradiction disappears when we read the words in light of that true expression of the believer’s nature, – “I live, yet not I, but Christ is living in me.” The next time you feel very vulnerable, and it seems the truth about your weaknesses has been exposed, remember that is the very moment when you should begin to shout the shout of victory, for, in your weaknesses, His strength is made perfect. Weakness is a gift, for they teach us to live by faith. They teach us to live from Christ. That which the enemy intended to be his victory turns out to be his defeat and your triumph. Again, the serpent swallows himself.
