Song of Solomon 2:14
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
14 “O my dove, in the clefts of the rock,
In the secret place of the steep pathway,
Let me see your form,
Let me hear your voice;
For your voice is sweet,
And your form is lovely.”
By calling her His dove, the Bridegroom King acknowledges that the Shulamite has chosen the “good part,” to live her life as a Wasted Lover. Having surrendered to loves fascination, she is now called up to the Secret Place of The Steep Pathway. He is calling her to live behind the veil, hidden away in His presence. He longs to hear her voice in undistracted devotion, and to see her presence radically present to Him. He tells her that her voice is sweet to Him, and that her presence is lovely. That Hebrew word “lovely” is an amazing word. It doesn’t just carry the idea of something beautiful, but it also carries the idea of something that is “fitting, belongs, comfortable, and home.” He is remarkably telling her that her presence is “home” to Him, and that His presence is “home” to us. We are His abiding place and He is ours. If we choose the “Doves Life,” to live in Him behind the veil in the Secret Place, then He will live in us beyond the veil in the Public Place.
