1 The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s.
2 “May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!
For your love is better than wine.
3 “Your oils have a pleasing fragrance,
Your name is like purified oil;
Therefore the maidens love you.
4 “Draw me after you and let us run together!
The king has brought me into his chambers.”
“We will rejoice in you and be glad;
We will extol your love more than wine.
Rightly do they love you.”
The Shulammite’s testimony in verse two and three is that Jesus has encountered her with His manifest presence and His transcendent love that has awakened something inside of her. Just like Mary Magdalene in Luke chapter 7, when she got in the presence of Jesus, His presence and His irresistible and massive love awakened her heart and set her free and set her on a path of joyfully waste her life on Jesus, for loves sake. As I mentioned before, the oils speak of His presence, and in verse three she says that His name is “purified oil.” The Hebrew word “purified” means “to empty”or “to pour forth.” I believe it has a dual meaning. First, she sees Him as one whose love for her is so “other,” that He emptied Himself in total self sacrifice for her, and secondly, He “pours forth” His presence. Presence “poured forth” is all about accessibility and relationship. He always loves our presence, He always loves to be with us, and hear our voice. He delights in us, even in our weakness, and immaturity. She discovered how much He cherished her, and how He longs to just be with her in transparent affection. We are always welcome in His presence, and He loves to reveal His heart to us. He is “The Word.” “The Door,” and Revelation says He is “The Voice.” All of these titles speak of accessibility. She is being captivated by His furious love, and His all satisfying presence. She is discovering that she is His FAVORITE. When you begin to get a revelation of that, even in seed form, you’ll understand why in the last line of verse three she said, “No wonder the Hidden Ones love you.” We never love Him first; we always love Him back, in response to His unveiled love and presence, and when love is awakened in us we find ourselves saying to Him, “Your commandments are like kisses.” His encountered love, and manifest presence births a heart that does His will out of sheer delight (Ps.40;8), and pleads for more opportunities. This is what Paul was talking about when he said he was controlled by the love of Christ. Not fear, or guilt, or shame, or duty, but love.
