Song 1:2 ¶ “May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!
For your love is better than wine.
Wine in the Song of Solomon always speaks all pleasures, good or bad, that brings “gladness of heart.” The word “mouth” can also be translated as “commandment.” There is a heart cry here by the Shulamite for deeper encounter with His heart, in intimacy. Of course this is all metaphor and type concerning us (the Shulamite), and The Lord Jesus (Solomon). Beyond the heart cry for intimacy, The Shulamite is saying “I’ve had a life changing encounter with the love of Christ, that has proven to bring more Gladness of Heart to me than any pleasure I have ever known.” The result is a radical surrender, and giving up her life, as she longs to go deeper into His heart, and extravagantly love Him back through acts of obedience. John recorded Jesus saying, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments,” and The Shulamite wants to live a life now of excessive obedience for the sake of love. Her heart has been so wrecked by His love, she says “your commandments (His personal requirements of us; His expressed wiil) are like kisses.” Wow!! That’s the way to live. Most Christians treat His will like its something burdensome. The “Yielded” are so excited at the chance of loving Him back through obedience, they see His expressed will, His commandments, as KISSES.
