John 2:2 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus *said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother *said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. 7 Jesus *said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He *said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it to him. 9 When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, 10 and *said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
The word “beginning” in verse 11 is the word that means “arch.” This was Jesus’s first miracle and it was an arching miracle. In other words, if arches over all miracles. That is, there are principles and truths found in this miracle that are realized in every other sign and wonder Jesus performed. There are many truths about the ways of God found in this miracle at the wedding in Cana, and everything else Jesus did and does fit into one of the narratives of the miracle at the wedding in Cana.
I want to focus on one of the truths today. In verse 5 Mary tells the servants “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Jesus told them to fill the water pots with water, and they responded by filling them to the brim. What Jesus asked them to do probably didn’t make much sense to them, but they obeyed by filling the pots as full as they could get them. The result of their obedience was the miraculous activity of God released into the situation. This is such an important truth. So many people believe that stewarding and releasing the miraculous activity of God in their lives is all about some charismatic power encounter, and I’m all for those, but those encounters simply ignite things in our lives, which is important, but if you are going to steward the miraculous, supernatural activity of God as a continual way of life, then explicit obedience to “Whatever He says to you” to do, is the only anointed path. I love what the servants did. They didn’t just fill the water pots; they filled them to the brim. They did all they could do. There was not one more drop to be added. Their compliance was radically total. This is the kind of heart God is looking for; and this is the kind of response that releases the supernatural activity of God.
