Heb. 4:12-16 “12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
When the writer of Hebrews tells us that Jesus, as the son of God passed through the heavens, I don’t believe he’s talking about the Ascension. Instead, I believe we’re being told about the nativity and the Incarnation. I believe the Holy Spirit is telling us that God doesn’t just love us from a lofty position in heaven. He loved us so much that He wanted to make sure that we feel comfortable coming into His presence with transparency. He accomplish that by passing through the heavens down to earth allowing himself to be tempted in every way just like we are, so that we would know with confidence but He can sympathize with our weaknesses, and our frailties. You see, it’s not that our omniscient God, can’t understand everything about us, but He wanted us to have no doubts about that, therefore He came to suffer the weight of temptation so that we would know He knows and understands. Again, transformation takes place in His presence, and therefore the enemies job is to keep us through, shame and fear, from drawing near to Him and abiding in His presence. The Lord could’ve come to earth in His Son the day of the crucifixion and died for our sins, without going through the trauma of living 33 years on falling earth, as a man. Yet, our fellowship with him is so important to Him that He spent 33 years on Earth suffering battle on the front line, so that we would know He understands, and we would be confident drawing near where our Wholeness happens. What great love is this; incomprehensible, unimaginable, wholly (Holy) reckless and transformational.
