Iv’e often heard people use the phrase “blind faith,” yet as Christians there is nothing blind about our faith. Heb. 11 says that Faith is “substance.” Faith isn’t pretending something is true, and faith doesn’t make anything true; instead, faith happens because something already is true, even if not yet visible to the natural eye. Faith simply looks into a different realm of reality and sees what is true, and pulls that already existing reality into the seen realm. Romans 10:17 famously says that faith comes from hearing the word of Christ, but I would say that there is something even more foundational that Faith stands on. I guess technically what I’m about to tell you is a “word” of Christ because it is a verse from scripture, but what I’m going to give you is not about a specific word that is about some specific type of situation, but it is a more general word that covers every situation. God may give you more specifics about your circumstance, but what I’m about to tell you is the foundational word from which all faith flows. Heb. 11: 6, ”And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” There it is. The great reality that keeps faith from being blind. As a matter of fact, in light of this verse, we walk into faith with our eyes wide open. Pay close attention to what it says; faith involves two things; believing that He is, and believing that He is a rewarder. The phrase “He is,” is in the third person. Second person would be “You are,” and therefore first person would be “I am.” In every situation of life the Lord Jesus is standing there saying “I am.” That phrase covers a lot of territory. Jesus is saying I am present; I am available; I am willing; I am in control; and I am able. Jesus is saying I am the great reality in this situation; not the situation itself, nor all the details of the situation. Jesus is saying that He is here and He is available, and that He is big enough. In every situation, in response to Jesus saying “I am,” we can respond by restfully declaring yes “You are.”
The second thing this verse tells us is that faith believes He is a rewarder. In other words, faith believes that He is going to act in this situation, with Blessing. I may not know yet how He is going to act, or what it’s going to look like, but I can be sure that He is now taking the situation into His hands, and that He is going to spring into action, in power and blessing.
These two things or at the heart of faith, and this scripture is foundational. Faith believes that He is ever present, and always more than bigger enough, and that He, in response to my confidence will always move into action.
