Song 3:6 “Who is this coming up from the wilderness
Like columns of smoke,
Perfumed with myrrh and frankincense,
With all scented powders of the merchant?
Song 3:7 “Behold, it is the traveling couch of Solomon;
Sixty mighty men around it,
Of the mighty men of Israel.
Song 3:8 “All of them are wielders of the sword,
Expert in war;
Each man has his sword at his side,
Guarding against the terrors of the night.
The Risen Christ comes up out of the wilderness, having conquered death and this fallen world, to carry us safely to our wedding. He comes like columns of smoke, seated in His sedan chair, in the midst of a fierce and glorious procession. The smoke speaks of His manifest presence; His glory.
Is. 6:4 And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke.
The sedan chair was carried on the shoulders of the mighty men, thus elevated above the earth. Jesus rests in that traveling couch as it moves through the wilderness. Jesus, covered with the scent of myrrh, frankincense, and the powders of the merchant, calls us to be seated in the Heavenly places with Him, elevated, as we travel, experiencing His rest, as we lean on our Beloved. During our journey through the wilderness, we share in the smoke of His presence and glory.
Col. 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
This is how we are called to travel through this world that is full of “the terrors of the night.” May we treasure, these truths until they so implanted in our hearts, that at the end of our journey it will be said about us what was said about the Shulamite in 8:5, “Who is this coming up out of the wilderness leaning on her Beloved”
There are so many rich truths here that we will learn together, as we ponder these amazing verses.
