(1 Cor.10 :1-4) “For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 and all ate the same spiritual food; 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
(Ps. 78:20) “20 “Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out,
And streams were overflowing;
Can He give bread also?
Will He provide meat for His people?”
When Moses struck the rock it did not release just a small stream of water. Instead, verse 20 in Psalm 78 says that the waters gushed out, and there were streams (multiple steams) that were overflowing. Remember, this had to be enough water to quench the thirst of 2 million people. So this had to be a pretty large rock, or Boulder, from which a great volume of water was flowing.
In the 1st Corinthians passage it says something very interesting, and that is that the rock followed them wherever they went in the wilderness. It also says in that passage that the rock was actually Christ. Whenever you think of a boulder you think of strength and stability. Something that is immovable.
When you refer to someone as a “rock” you’re saying to them they are strong and stable, and we know that scripture often refers to God as our “Rock.” We are also told in Matthew 7 that we are to build our spiritual houses, that is our spiritual lives, on Jesus the Rock, and not on shifting sand.
Think about this, we know that Jesus is our source of stability and strength. He is immovable, and from Him flows a river of living water that fills us with life. Actually, the “Rock” that is Jesus, lives in us, and the rivers of living water that flow from Him flow in us and out from us, into every situation, and to a lost and dying world. Things in this life are often changing, and unpredictable. Life is fluid, and always on the move. Sometimes the changes are good things, but often the changes can be frightening, and stressful. Isn’t it nice to know that the rock who is our source of stability, and strength, from whom flows rivers of living water, follows us into every change, and every situation, no matter how simple, or severe they may be. The “Rock” is always there with us. Stability follows us; strength tags along, and rivers of living water are always present, and maybe the most amazing thing of all is that He’s with us as our “Rock” because we actually carry Him in us into every situation of life. While everything around changes, we can be immovable in our thought life, and in our emotions because the Immovable One is in us; and we can stay refreshed and fully impassioned with life, because the rivers of living water are always spring up in us from the “ROCK.”
