Luke 2:12 “This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Luke 2:16 So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.
Luke 2:20 The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.
This great sign has significance for more than just you and me personally, it is a great sign to all of humanity. Here we see how God feels about humanity, and what His plans are for fallen Man. He could have come as a full adult, instead He clothed Himself in human flesh in the womb, and at birth; living as an infant in all of the frailties of infancy. Jesus, in the Nativity, identifies with humanity at its weakest. “The Word Became Flesh,” and He is fully human, and fully God even now, and throughout eternity. Jesus, by becoming flesh, reveals God’s plan to restore mankind to the place of nobility Man was created to enjoy. God could have rescued fallen Man a number of ways, but the Incarnation isn’t a rescue, it is a Coronation. Jesus didn’t come to destroy humanity; He came to elevate us to our royal heritage as God bearers; image bearers created to reveal His likeness.
