Mark 10:17 ¶ As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
Mark 10:18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.
John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has revealed Him.
1Tim. 3:16 By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness:
He who was revealed in the flesh,
That seems to be a strange response by Jesus, but He was revealing His true nature as the Son of Man, and the reality of an Incarnational life. Jesus, though God, lived as a totally dependent Spirit-Filled Man. He was saying, as man, the only explanation for His goodness was not His innate goodness as God, but the presence of The Father by The Holy Spirit dwelling in Him. Jesus was showing us the way to live an Incarnational life. He was showing us that goodness doesn’t find it’s origin in our humanity, but in The One who is Deity’ and who lives in us, and is prepared at any moment to live through us. This is the mystery of godliness revealed; God revealed in human flesh. If you find that throughout the day you can’t be good in certain areas, that isn’t a surprise to God at all, and shouldn’t be to you. You and I were created to be utterly, and desperately dependent on God to be good. He has clothed Himself with your humanity so that He can express His goodness through you “to the praise of the glory of ah us grace,” Allow Him, the only One who is good, live His Godly live through you. Let Him take you out for a spin, and watch how good He can be through you.
