One Thing 1/20/17

John 14:8 Philip *said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus *said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves. 12 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
In these verses Jesus speaks of His union with the Father, and therefore their mutual indwelling. He described their union by saying that He was in the Father, and that the Father was in Him. When Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus simply said that when they saw Him they saw the Father. Jesus wasn’t saying that he was the Father, but He was saying that He had fulfilled his calling as decreed in John 1: 18 to reveal the Father, and He did that by allowing the Father to live throughHim,  and do the works through Him Him by the Holy Spirit. In verse 11 Jesus said that if they couldn’t believe Him that He was in the Father, and the Father was in Him simply because He told them it was true, then they should believe that He was in union with the Father because of the miraculous lifestyle He was living. Obviously, one of the proofs of the Fathers indwelling presence would be a lifestyle of godliness, and holiness, but in this verse Jesus makes it very clear that one of the clear evidences of being in union with the Father was His miraculous lifestyle. Then, in the very next sentence He said that we would do even greater works because He was going to the Father. Of course, when Jesus went to the Father, the Holy Spirit was poured out on us. Therefore, as a result of the presence of the Holy Spirit in us we share a mutual indwelling with Jesus. Jn.14:20, “In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” We now are in union with Jesus just as He was in union with the Father; thus we should give the same evidence of that union by a miraculous lifestyle. A lifestyle of signs and wonders is not optional if we are serious about stewarding Christlikeness.
