Mark 4:35-40 NASB
On that day, when evening came, He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side.” [36] Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. [37] And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. [38] Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” [39] And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and there was a great calm. [40] And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
Hebrews 4:9-10 NASB
So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. [10] For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.
God does not just offer us rest, he offers us His rest. How gloriously wonderful His rest is. Can you imagine the peace (the rest of heart) that God experiences in his inner person. Not just freedom from anxiety, worry and fear, but the absolute peace and calm of God residing in your heart.
Look at this story above, because it gives a perfect picture of the rest of God being manifested in the life of Jesus. Jesus only did those things he saw the Father doing, and he only said those things he heard the Father saying. Obviously Jesus knew that the Father wanted to go to the other side of the lake, and therefore by faith He spoke that to his disciples. When the storm hit Jesus was in the stern of the boat soundly asleep, because he had no concern as to whether they were going to survive the storm are not. He was in the father, and the father was in him, and therefore he was totally confident in the adequacy of the Father to get the boat to the other side. Was the FIERCE storm a surprise to the humanity of Jesus? Possibly. Jesus’s confidence and rest of heart had nothing to do with how big or small the storm was. He was resting in how BIG the Father was in Him and for this situation. 2020 has been a FIERCE STORM that caught us all by surprise, but our peace has nothing to do with whether the storm will diminish or not. Our internal rest is in His confidence in His faithfulness and adequacy. Jesus was in union with the father, and you and I are in union with Jesus, and therefore everything that He calls us to walk through we can absolutely rest in his adequacy to do it. Remember, that we’ve been placed into His life and His story, and He is always more than big enough for the situations He chooses for us to walk through in union with Him. When we look back at 2020 it will not be the devils story, though the devil has been a player, but it will be HIS STORY. HISTORY always ends up being HIS-STORY.
Jesus knew the boat could not sink regardless of how severe the storm was, because the Father was bigger than the storm. The disciples on the other hand were full of anxiety and fear, and when they finally got Jesus’s attention, and the storm was stopped, it says there was a GREAT CALM. There was a great calm after the storm was stopped, but Jesus knew a great calm in his heart while the storm was still raging. This is the life of knowing His Rest. Sadly, most Christians live the Christian life freaking out in the midst of storms, begging Jesus to make them stop, and then only being calm when the storm has passed.
Supernatural Christianity lived out of union with Christ is experiencing HIS great calm even while the storm is blowing. Even a lost person can know peace when there are no storms, but only those in Christ can know perfect peace during the storm, because they know that, “Faithful is He who calls you (to walk through any situation or responsibility) who also will do it (through you, supplying you every step of the way with His illimitable adequacy.)” 1 Thess. 5:24
