Colossians 2:9-15 NASB
For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, [10] and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; [11] and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; [12] having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. [13] When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, [14] having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. [15] When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.
At the cross, Jesus became sin on our behalf, and he did that by becoming us at Calvary, because of our being in Him. Our certificate of debt, consisting of all the decrees against us (all the sins we have or ever will commit) was canceled and taken out of the way. Jesus became our certificate of debt, and he died as us, being nailed to the cross. From the Cross Jesus cried out “tetelestai,” which means an intended and longed for goal has been “completed, accomplished, finished, perfected.” Nailed to the cross in the person of Jesus, our sins were paid for, and the Sinner was crucified, which is what verse eleven is talking about when it’s says at the cross we experience a circumcision made without hands; the circumcision of our flesh.
As a result of sins being paid for, and our flesh being circumcised through the crucifixion of the old man and the raising of the new man in union with Christ, Satan was totally disarmed, and the triumph of Jesus over him was put on public display. Without mankind being under the condemnation sin, and without having the “in the flesh” person to work with, because the slave to sin was was removed, and the birthing of the new creation emergeg in union with the resurrection of Jesus, the enemy no longer has anything to work with, or have any more authority over, those in Christ. When Jesus said from the cross “IT IS FINISHED,” he was saying the old order was over and done with, and a whole new order has emerged. Sins condemnation was finished; the slave to sin was crucified, a new creation was birthed in union with the life of Christ, and Satan’s power and authority was over. Jesus was saying that the old mess with all of its brokenness and bondage was finished, because the cross was perfect.
