Song 2:16 “My beloved is mine, and I am his;
He pastures his flock among the lilies.
Eight different times lilies are referred to in the Song of Solomon. Lilies speak of purity of heart, and beauty, as it relates to purity.
2Cor. 11:2 For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin.
2Cor. 11:3 But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.
Purity of heart is simply a heart surrendered in devotion to Him. It’s a set apart heart, that’s been given away by you to Him, as The Love, and Goal of your life. Look back at S.S. 2:2, where He says that she is “like a Lily among the thorns, so is my love among the maidens.” This is what Jesus finds beautiful; a heart set apart to seek His presence, and ravish His heart, as it’s life pursuit. Psalm 45 is a psalm that in its heading is called a psalm “according to Lilies.” It’s a psalm about mutual Lovesickness. A song of love. The Psalmist says in verse 1-2 says that his heart overflows with a song that has one theme, and that one theme is the King (Jesus) IS FAIRER THAN THE SONS OF MEN. In verse 10-11, The King says because of her set apart heart for Him, He is enthralled by Her beauty.
I want Him to be enthralled with my beauty, don’t you. When in Ephesians 5 we are told to sing and make melody in our hearts to The Lord, maybe it’s the song of the Lilies in Psalm 45:1, “Thought art fairer than the sons of men.”
